professional Oriental performer, masterfully using the unique Egyptian dance technique and solo tabla technique. Virtuoso musician-percussionist, playing for the stars of Bellydance in Cairo, such as Badra, Oxana Bazaeva, Maria Shashkova and others. Possessing an incredible sense of rhythm and fantastic musicality.

GRAND ALKAWNDANCE FESTIVAL
ВThe oriental music group ORIENTAL BAND was created in 2020 in Moscow. The musicians perform all genres of Middle Eastern music:
CLASSICS - tarab, mejance
FOLKLORE - baladi, shaabi, saidi, khaligi, mahraganat, Iraqi songs, Lebanese, Palestinian and Syrian dabke. The artists have extensive experience working with both beginners and professional dancers at various venues in Russia.
The band members:
OKBA JUMA – the band leader, singer, plays the oud and violin
SAM ALI – the band’s vocalist
AHMED MUSTAFA – accordionist, keyboardist of the band
GHAITH AVAD – the band’s percussionist
TITO – plays on the drum kit
ISLAM – plays on the doholla, mazhar and riq
Each of the ensemble’s musicians is a laureate of numerous music and dance festivals and has worked in various cities of Russia. The “Oriental Band” includes not only musicians, but also professional dancers who perform folk dances such as Dabke, Tanura and Iskandarani.

    Children - to 10 years old
    Juniors - 11-14 years old
    Youth - 15-19 years old
    Adults 1 - 20-30 years old
    Adults 2 - 31-40 years old

    Seniors - 60 years old and older
    The festival organizers reserve the right to combine age categories in each nomination at their own discretion.
  • SKILL LEVELS
    DEBUT – performers who have no previous performance experience

    BEGINNERS – performers with some experience of solo/group performances (up to 2 years) at various events.

    INTERMEDIATE – performers with sufficient experience of solo/group performances at various events with at least 2 years of performance experience.

    PROFESSIONAL CANDIDATES – performers who have won and received awards at competitions and have at least 2 years of experience performing with a live orchestra.

    PROFESSIONALS – performers (15 years and older) with extensive experience of solo performances at any events, who have won and received awards at other competitions, as well as dance group teachers with at least 3 years of experience performing, including with a live orchestra.

    The participant’s skill level is determined independently and cannot differ in different nominations. The organizer has the right to reject an application containing different information about the skill level in different nominations. If the Organizer knows that a participant has a skill level higher than indicated in the application, the Organizer has the right not to accept the participant's application, but will recommend correcting the data and re-submitting it.

  • CATEGORY OF PARTICIPANTS

    3. Groups (3-10 people) – the age category is determined by the majority of participants of the same age category
    There is no division in Duets and Groups by skill level.
  • COMPETITION NOMINATIONS
    WITH CD
    ORIENTAL - tarab (classical Arabic song), mejance, beledi progression (performance to Arabic instrumental music created by non-Egyptian composers, performed in oriental costume). Possible accessories: veil, split veil, two veils, sagat, assaia(only if the saidi style is present in a specific fragment of the composition), but not more than 30% of the entire composition. The use of folk costume and show elements, as well as other accessories, other than those listed, is unacceptable.

    EGYPTIAN FOLKLORE - Saidi, Ghawazi, Muwashahat, Fallahi, Haggala, Bedouin dances, Suez Canal dances. The dance must be performed to the music of a given nationality, in a costume corresponding to this style and the age of the performer , the dance must contain characteristic manner, movements, dramaturgy of this particular folklore style.

    BALADI / SHA'ABI - the dance is performed in a costume corresponding to the style and the age of the performer, must contain characteristic movements, manner, dramaturgy of this particular folklore style.

    NON-EGYPTIAN FOLKLORE - folklore of the Persian Gulf, Maghreb countries, Turkish gypsy-Roman havasi. The dance must be performed to the music of a given nationality, in a costume corresponding to this style and the age of the performer, must contain characteristic manner, movements, dramaturgy of this particular folklore style.

    It is possible to combine folklore nominations at the discretion of the organizers.
    POP SONG – songs of modern Arabic performers (Pop Oriental). For example: Wael Kfoury, Fadel Shaker, Elissa, Ramy Ayash, Nawal Zoughby, Haifa Wehbe.

    TABLAH demonstration of dance technique to a rhythmic composition, at least 80% of which must be performed to Arabic drums.

    WITH THE ORCHESTRA
    ORIENTAL – see description with CD. The musical composition is selected from the orchestra’s song list.
    EGYPTIAN FOLKLORE – see description with CD. The musical composition is selected from the orchestra’s song list.
    BALADI / SHAABİ – see description BALADI / SHAABİ with CD. The musical composition is selected from the orchestra’s song list.
    NON-EGYPTIANFOLKLORE – see description with CD. The musical composition is selected from the orchestra’s song list.
    BALADI accordion (Ahmed Mustafa) + Tabla Solo (Ghaith Avad). Improvisation to takasim by accordion with transition to tabla solo without choosing a musical composition. Performed in a baladi costume.
    TABLAH SOLO (Ghaith Avad) - improvisation to live tabla.

    The organizers of the Festival are not responsible for the variations of the composition chosen by the participant performed by the orchestra. All members of the orchestra are professional musicians with extensive experience at festivals.
  • PERFORMANCE TIMING

    Debut and beginners no more than 2 minutes
    Intermediate no more than 3 minutes
    Professionals and candidates no more than 4 minutes
    Improvisation to live tabla for babies and children is no more than 2 minutes, for other age categories no more than 2.5 minutes.

    Please prepare your music strictly in accordance with the time limit. In case of exceeding the time limit the music will be stopped during the performance!
  • TOP NOMINATIONS
    are intended for professional dancers. In case of less than three participants, age categories, if provided, are combined at the discretion of the organizers.

    QUEEN OF ALKAWN, accompanied by an orchestra in the Cabaret style. The performances are final, the duration of each is no more than 10 minutes. There is no division by age - 16+.
    The judges will be : Yusri Sharif, David Calderon and Vaagn Tadevosyan.
    Participants choose songs for their performance from the orchestra's song list in advance and prepare a program. The following genres are allowed: mejance, classical song, modern popular song, baladi, shaabi, khaligi, iraqi, Egyptian and non-Egyptian folk styles, tabla solo. Costume changes are allowed (the time for changing the image must be included in the time limit of the performance), backup dancers may be used and any accessories, except for those prohibited by these regulations. The participant dances the program strictly in accordance with the time limit. The presence of backup dancers is not additionally assessed.

    PROFESSIONAL CROWN by MAESTRO YUSRI SHARIF accompanied by an orchestra. The performances are final, the duration of each is no more than 4.5 minutes. Division by age: 16-40, 41+ years. In case of less than 5 participants in one of the age categories, the ages are combined into one 16+. Only Yusri Sharif is the judge. The participants are provided in advance (no later than April 1, 2025) with a list of 10 classical songs (tarab), which will be selected for the nomination. Before the start of the nomination, all declared participants will be invited to the stage to draw lots for the order of performance and musical composition. After which a 10-15 minute break will be provided for preparation.
    Contestants will be assessed in accordance with the evaluation criteria.


    DAVID CALDERON'S CROWN to a pre-prepared musical composition no longer than 6 minutes, recorded in a single mp3 track. The performances are final. Age division: 16-40, 41+ years. If there are less than 5 participants in one of the age categories, the ages are combined into one 16+.
    Assessed only by David Calderon. Participants choose for their performance any mix of compositions in the genre of mejance, classical song, modern popular song, Egyptian and non-Egyptian folklore, tabla solo. Costume changes are allowed (the time for changing the image must be included in the time limit of the performance) and any accessories, except for those prohibited by these regulations. The participant dances the program strictly in accordance with the time limit.

    VAAGN TADEVOSYAN'S CROWN to a pre-prepared musical composition mp3 track. The performances are final, the duration of each is no more than 3.5 minutes. Division by age: 16-40, 41+ years. In case of less than 5 participants in one of the age categories, the ages are combined into one 16+. Vaagn Tadevosyan is the single judge. Participants choose any compositions in any genre for their performance (mejance, classical song, modern popular song, Egyptian and non-Egyptian folklore, tabla solo). Image changes are not provided. Any accessories are allowed, except for those prohibited by these regulations.

    All performances are final, in case of more than 10 applications in one nomination of a certain age category, qualifying rounds may be provided.
  • DOWNLOADING MUSIC

    During the festival, you must have a duplicate of the music on a USB drive containing only the tracks to which the participant performs at this Festival.
    Each music file must contain the following information in the title: performer's last name, age category, nomination, skill level
    For example: IvanovaN_adults3_egyp.folklore_ prof. candidates.
    The event organizer undertakes not to transfer the soundtrack to third parties!!!
    Soundtracks of the compositions that are performed to the dancer's music must be sent through the music upload form on the website:
